An FHA home loan is a mortgage insured by the Federal Housing Administration, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It is an alternative to a conventional mortgage, and are generally intended to help people with limited down payment funds or modest credit history.

A major difference between an FHA loan and a conventional mortgage is that FHA borrowers only have to put down 3.5 percent on the purchase. Closing costs may also be lower on FHA mortgages.

A Veterans Affair, or VA, loan entitlement is a basic entitlement of $36,000 that is available to eligible veterans seeking a VA home loan. Recently a research team in the UK was awarded a grant from the Oral and Dental Research Trust to help develop a quick and reliable saliva test for periodontal disease. The funding will allow the research team to identify biomarkers of periodontal disease which would be used to develop this test.

Any development that helps raise awareness of this disease amongst the general public is to be welcomed. By this stage the condition often cannot be completely cured and we have to provide ongoing treatment to manage it. It is quite distressing, especially as when caught in the early stages, periodontal disease is completely curable.”

Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition caused by bacterial infection. It affects the gum tissue as well as the structures supporting the teeth including ligaments and bone. Periodontal disease has also been linked to serious health conditions and it affects a large proportion of American adults. This disease is a major cause of tooth loss.

“I’d urge anyone who is worried about their gum health to schedule an evaluation with a periodontist who has received years’ of additional training in treating this condition” said Dr. Royzman. “Symptoms that shouldn’t be ignored include bleeding or swollen gums, noticing teeth look longer than before due to gum recession. New York, NY, July 20, 2016 - Dr. Oleg Klemper, a prominent NYC dentist at 200 Central Park South Dental Care commented on a new study into the development of a mouthwash that may help slow down or even eradicate the problem of tooth decay.

In 2011 Dr. Wenyuan Shi of UCLA developed mouthwash that could help eliminate the bacteria responsible for tooth decay.  Now a new study is able to describe precisely why this mouthwash is so effective.

The research has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and it shows how an antimicrobial peptide called C16G2 or STAMP is able to eradicate only those bacteria responsible for tooth decay, called Streptococcus mutans. The interesting thing about this mouthwash is that it is able to leave the benign bacteria untouched, encouraging better oral health.

Commenting on the study Dr. Oleg Klempner said “The development of a mouthwash that only targets specific and harmful bacteria is exciting. It’s well known that most of the bacteria in the human mouth are benign, but the majority of mouthwashes will kill all types of bacteria. Overuse of antibiotics is another problem and which can increase a person’s susceptibility to microbial infections, making it more difficult for the body to fight the bacteria responsible for causing tooth decay.”

New York, NY, July 20, 2016 - Dr. Marianna Weiner of Envy Smile Dental Spa in Brooklyn NYC commented on a recent investigation into the prevalence of gingivitis during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy as she frequently sees pregnant patients.

The investigation evaluated the dental health of more than 800 women with an average maternal age of 27.8 years. Clinical examinations showed moderate to severe gingivitis was common during the late first and second trimester, indicating that regular dental care before and during pregnancy is vital for maintaining good dental health.

“Pregnancy brings about huge hormonal changes which can increase the risk of gingivitis” said Dr. Weiner. “This is because the surge in hormones increases the sensitivity of gum tissue to bacterium responsible for causing gingivitis. Women who already have signs of gum disease before their pregnancy begins are at increased risk. This is just one of the reasons why I strongly recommend anyone who is thinking adding to their family should visit their dentist prior to pregnancy or soon after their pregnancy is confirmed.”

Dentists may often choose to keep a closer eye on women during pregnancy if they are at increased risk of developing gingivitis, or if they already have periodontal disease. Preventative dental treatments such as more frequent dental cleanings can help to lower this risk.

Gingivitis and periodontal disease are unfortunately very common and many American adults will develop this condition to some degree during their lifetime. Several clinical studies have been conducted into the presence of periodontal disease during pregnancy and it has been linked to preterm and low birth weight babies. 

Dr. Weiner went on to say “The early stages of periodontal disease, called gingivitis are often easily cured, but periodontal disease is very different and far more serious. As well as potentially affecting an unborn child, this disease is thought to have a detrimental effect on a person’s general health.”

New York, NY, July 20, 2016 - Dr. Marina Krepkh, a pediatric dentist at the Kids Dentistry Center commented on a recent research showing the efficacy of a brushing app that could help children as she works tirelessly to promote better dental health amongst her young patients.

Brush DJ is an app that was originally launched at the end of 2011. By February last year, it had been downloaded onto more than 197,000 devices and was being used in 188 countries. A research team looked into the efficacy of the app, with the results of the study being published in the British Dental Journal. Researchers found that 70% of those surveyed said their teeth had felt cleaner since they started using the app, while 88% felt motivated to brush their teeth for longer. Apparently the app managed to increase patient compliance and 90% of those who took part in the study would recommend it to others.

Commenting on the study Dr. Krepkh said “This is particularly interesting because the app plays music for two minutes, encouraging tooth brushing for this time. It also reminds those using the app to spit but not to rinse. It could be particularly effective for children who may have trouble remaining motivated to brush for the full two minutes each time, something that is essential for a healthy smile.”

As a pediatric dentist, Dr. Krepkh works hard to educate her young patients on how to brush effectively. “By working with young children and by teaching good dental habits in a way that is interesting and fun, I hope to instill healthy dental habits that will last for life. If using any type of dental app will help them to brush more regularly, then this can only be positive.”

Tooth decay is a huge problem for young children in the United States but it is entirely preventable with the correct dental care. New York, NY, July 20, 2016 - Dr. Dmitry Epelboym, the principal dentist of the Cosmetic Dentistry Center in NYC, a dental office that routinely carries out successful dental implant treatments, commented on a recent study highlighting the risk of chronic pain after dental implant surgery.

Researchers from King's College, London in the UK examined ten patients who had attended the orofacial pain clinic at the dental institute. These patients had reported severe and chronic pain after having dental implants. The researchers found that nine out of ten of the participants had reported experiencing severe chronic pain immediately after dental implant surgery. Half of those patients began experiencing pain during surgery, in spite of the dental implant dentist using anesthesia. On average they had spent 3.4 years before attending the orofacial pain clinic. Two of these patients had had their implants removed prior to attending the clinic but this had failed to stop the pain. Additionally, the study showed that six out of the 10 patients had a medical history of conditions that included peripheral neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression.

Commenting on the study Dr. Epelboym said “Chronic pain caused by dental implants is extremely rare and taking the proper precautions will help prevent this from occurring. It’s important dental implant dentists screen their patients extremely carefully for suitability before recommending this surgery. Treatment planning is also vital. We use advanced diagnostics that include a CT scan providing a detailed 3-D image of the patient’s jaws. This shows the exact location of all the nerves and blood vessels that must be avoided during implant surgery and so we can avoid chronic pain that may be caused if a dental implant is placed too close to a nerve.”

In spite of this study, it’s been shown that chronic pain after having dental implants is very rare, and pain may be linked to psychological and social factors. Neuropathic pain is often difficult to treat as sometimes it can develop without any apparent nerve injuries.

“When properly planned, dental implant surgery is generally very successful and many patients have benefited tremendously from this treatment” said Dr. Epelboym.

New York, NY, July 20, 2016 - Dr. Navid Rahmani,a respected periodontist of NYC Dental Implants Center commented on a latest research into periodontal disease, a recent study that looked at if recreational cannabis use could be linked with physical health problems later in life.

Researchers used data from more than 1000 individuals who were born in New Zealand in the early seventies and who were followed up to age thirty eight. They were interested in learning whether cannabis use between the ages of eighteen and thirty-eight could be associated with physical health problems by age thirty-eight. Just over half of the participants in the study were male and 675 had used cannabis, while 484 had used tobacco every day.

The study found that cannabis use could be linked with poorer periodontal health by the time the study participants were thirty-eight years old, but it wasn’t found to be associated with other health problems. The study also suggested that cannabis users were less likely to brush and floss their teeth regularly and were more likely to be alcohol dependent.

Commenting on the study Dr. Rahmani said “It is interesting to learn that cannabis use may be associated with poorer periodontal health and particularly as the habit may be associated with less frequent brushing and flossing. Even though this study may have found no connection between cannabis use and physical health problems up the age of thirty eight, the presence of periodontal disease is thought to increase a person’s risk of developing other serious health problems. Numerous clinical studies have looked at the connection between periodontal disease and other diseases, including diabetes and heart disease.”

Periodontal disease is a huge problem worldwide and Dr Rahmani went on to say “It’s estimated around half of American adults will develop some degree of periodontal disease during their lifetime so any factor that can increase this risk is obviously concerning. Good periodontal care can help anyone gain and maintain healthy gums, but people need to be committed to regular daily oral care. If regular cannabis users are less likely to maintain good dental health, then it’s easy to see how its use is associated with an increased risk of periodontal disease.”
